a social butterfly flutters by

All this week I’ve been superbusy meeting and greeting and hanging out with friends. This could be a full-time job.

Sunday: I hosted 9 of my friends from church. This was the third time I’ve had them and I’m becoming a well oiled hosting machine. I made curry lentil soup and we played Loaded Questions. I think it all went well. I love the way our conversations flow back and forth between very serious and very lighthearted topics without any awkwardness.

Monday: I had dinner with my fabulous international banker friend Moniek from Holland. Her grandmother and my grandmother were friends back in the old country. We went to a very cool French restaurant called “Marseille” on 9th avenue. We talked for hours about careers, politics, and how much we both hate Maastricht.

Tuesday: In the morning I went to Financier Patisserie. (There were no soccer games on at the Red Lion that afternoon. alas. I did go last week and even dragged some friends along. When I came in, the bartender told me my “usual table” was available). Tuesday evening I had coffee with a friend from church. We met up at a really cute coffee shop with aquamarine walls near Union Square. We are both part of the same small group of friends so it was interesting to get his perspective on the personalities and dynamics.

Wednesday: I had my weekly dinner with my friend Shannon. We made greek salad. She’s off to college this fall and asked me about her various worries and concerns. It’s so touching the way she thinks I actually have answers.

Thursday: I went to a New York Young Republicans event. I ran into several people I had met at another event 2 weeks ago. The event featured two speakers – both vacuous Fox News political hacks who argued that John McCain is a great presidential candidate because he will broaden the Republican party’s appeal. It’s time to move past relying on the social conservatives to win elections and blah blah blah. I’m sure their ideas would appeal to several of my readers. You know who you are. Chatting with people afterward, I very diplomatically suggested that perhaps we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of social conservatives. I was met with horrified stares. Oh well. That’s New York.

Friday: my mom is coming. And after that I’m…well, I don’t want to think about that yet…I’ll keep you posted.
