Emma's social diary

An occasional series on the parties, receptions, etc. that liven up my Dutch life.

The event: My second ever Dutch wedding, attended with a group of 3 friends from my church. In Holland, it's perfectly socially acceptable to attend only the reception and not the wedding ceremony. Amazing, no? This is one area where Americans could learn something from the Dutch.

The couple: Rienk and Christina from my church. Christina wore a strapless ivory gown with jeweled bodice and wide skirt. Rienk wore white tie. In fact, all guests were requested to adhere to a white tie dress code. My group hadn't gotten the memo. ouch.

The venue: A local dance hall popular for salsa lessons.

Bar: Sort of open. Coffee, tea and soft drinks were freely available earlier. Later, an assortment of wines was proffered.

Unusual: The couple's first dance was to "Silent Night."
