one year ago today...

I woke up, got on the metro with Benjamin Franklin, boarded a plane, watched "The Office" midair, arrived in Frankfurt, read the Bible in the airport, took a train to Berlin, met up with my younger brother Nick and settled into a tiny apartment in a very Communist-looking apartment building.

In the 5 next weeks, I walked Potsdamer platz a hundred times, covered candidate Obama's speech, visited Holbein and Botticelli, drank coffee at Claerchen's ballhaus and Cafe Rosenrot (ok, and Starbucks. and I'm still sorry!), attended Wednesday night boatparties with French, Scottish and Danish expatriates, saw the blue gate of Ishtar, participated in Democrats Abroad and, tja, had a most wonderful summer, characterized by a sense of absolute potentiality that I doubt I will ever experience again.
