Last night I attended my first ever major soccer match FC Utrecht (my local team) vs FC Groningen. I went with my friend Moniek who is just as crazy about soccer as I am, so we had a lot of fun.
I had intended to adopt Utrecht as "my" team. but I am now backing away from that idea. Mainly because of the other fans. It seemed like the entire criminal underclass of Utrecht had turned up at the stadium. (Moniek points out that the 2 hours of the match are a very safe time to be out and about in the city).
The game itself was pretty good. very uptempo. It was really odd to be seeing this live instead of on TV like I'm used to. I got a little frustrated that there was no instant replay. I was also bummed that no one did the wave.
The referee was pretty cowardly. There was an out-and-out brawl between 2 players on the pitch. I was really hoping for a red card (how cool would that be?) but he didnt give out anything. FC Groningen won by scoring in the third minute of overtime, so that was pretty dramatic.
So then Moniek and I went back to the city and sat on a terrace by the canal for a couple hours talking. Such a lovely end to the evening. The soccer team may be declasse, but Utrecht itself is top flight.
